Modern Baroque
With the Modern Baroque series, Björn Schuppar brings Baroque opulence into the present and translates it into an expressive, fragmented visual language. The works oscillate between figuration and abstraction: bodies appear like sculptural fragments, overlaid with dynamic brush structures that hint at movement and transience.Bright areas of color in turquoise, orange and yellow contrast with deep black and earth tones, creating an exciting composition that is reminiscent of Baroque drama but anchored in a contemporary, almost digital aesthetic. The figures appear to be in a state of limbo - between closeness and distance, presence and dissolution. Schuppar plays with the idea of the Baroque as staging: exaggerated gestures, ornamental lines and rhythmic repetitions are translated into a modern formal language. This creates a dialog between past and present, between classical splendor and the fragmented perception of our time.
